  2. This whole business of pensions needs a fresh look, especially when so many employers will not take on anyone over the age of 50. It's a big scam, anyway, because these state schemes are a compulsory loan to governments. Private schemes are also a big scam, as the funds a vulnerable to frauds eg the great Robert Maxwell swindle. The underlying problem is reliance on the taxation of wages as a major source of public revenue. The tax wedge is the villain. The French should know better, as it was French economists who invented the concept of land value taxation, which gets rid of the tax wedge.
