Truss should stand firm. The EU protected Single Market is something that you don't want to be in. If the Republic wants a border then they can put one up for themselves. Everything you try and buy from outside the EU gets seized by customs. The EU is trying to make a grab for sovereignty. While Truss is at it she should scrap the Eurotax, VAT. It is the most inefficient and damaging tax ever invented.

The British can eat all the pork their farmers can produce. Here in Sweden we can only get streaky bacon. Sometimes there is back, from England, but there hasn't been any for weeks.

@jonathanbowers8964 Trade is based on geography and the Britain is an island and the Ireland is another island even further from mainland Europe. I don't know what you mean by "trading partner", but trade takes place between people and companies, and having to ship goods over the sea adds to the costs of logistics This will always put suppliers in the UK at a disadvantage compared to those in Germany. That is one reason why it never made sense for the UK to join the EU. It doesn't help that the EU cripples its own economies with the Eurotax and import tariffs. Did you know that these policies were advocated in Mein Kampf and put into effect by Goering in 1934? The purpose of an economy is not to make stuff and flog it to foreigners.

Scottish independence will bring ruin on Scotland. NI will cost the Republic big bucks.

@andrewemerson1613 "objective reality has an overwhelmingly liberal bias. there is literally no subject where the collective body of evidence supports the 'conservative' position.# Can you prove that objectively?

@sunspot42 They will both go broke within months. If the EU has any sense it will not take Scotland, ditto the Republic and Northern Ireland.

@maxdavis7722 Trade flows develop between countries with complementary economies eg Britain and Southern Hemisphere agricultural producers. Most of the original EEC countries had competing economies and the trade potential was for taking in each other's washing. Eastern Europe is a basket case precisely for geographical reasons, because trade to the east ie former Soviet countries, is blocked off. This is a factor in the current proxy war. Once goods are on board a ship, the cost of additional distance is relatively small. This works well for Britain, but not so much for Germany which is better place for trading with neighbouring countries with transport by road and rail.
