  2. Eastern Poland was absorbed into the Soviet Union, mostly now Western Ukraine. Western Poland was previously part of Germany. The postwar Poland was not subsumed into the Soviet Union. GDP figures mask a great difference between the east and west sides of the country. The west thrives but tbe east is blocked off from its natural trading links outside the EU.
