The EU's trade and economics policies are based on seventeenth century Mercantilist theory which was discredited by the classical economists, and remained discredited until revived by Keynes and the Nazis in the 1930s; it was former Nazi policy makers who were the architects of the EEC policies, which are a continuation of the Autarky policy of Germany in 1934. The principal flaws are the Eurotax (VAT), the CAP, the Protected Single Market and the Euro. The Euro means that Germans are paid in an undervalued currency and are effectively working a day a week for nothing. These are self-harming self-imposed sanctions. It is a formula for economic decline, just as the same polices led to the ruination of Spain, Portugal and France during the eighteenth century. One effect of the protected market is to restrict trade and the flow of goods at its borders. This is a cause of conflict at both east and west eg with the UK post-Brexit, and Russia. The UK has so far failed to take advantage of the opportunities Brexit offers. Given its inability to reform itself, the only hope is that the EU will disintegrate.
