It seems to me that this illustrates the need to cast doubt on the use of GDP as a policy objective. Less stuff is being produced, and less stuff is being consumed. Except that if people are at home, they are producing wealth outside the money economy eg the meal prepared at home from ingredients grown in one's garden or allotment does not show up in the GDP statistic, whereas the meal plucked from the supermarket freezer does, even though the home made meal is almost certainly a better quality one. 'The economy' does not pay for care homes. Care homes are paid for by people who are doing other work and can support those that work in the care homes. The country needs a decent tax system, which it has not had for centuries.
