The problem in Glasgow is buses grinding up the hills in the city centre and chucking out diesel exhaust, and the inner motorway. It is a 1960s planning legacy.

The air quality in Glasgow depends exactly where the measurements are taken. The air quality in some streets in the hilly centre of Glasgow is terrible. There is a one way system. The air in uphill streets such Hope Street is filthy. The main culprits are the buses. The trouble began in 1962 when the trams were scrapped, thanks to a Labour Council. With a week there was massive congestion and pollution, which there had not been before. Then they had to build inner city motoways which also cause pollution, and electric cars also cause plenty of pollution due to extra dust from tyres and tarmac. The city needs its trams back, and not those ridiculous long 3-car trams they have nowadays, which cause their own congestion.

People didn't drive cars in the city centres of Edinburgh and Glasgow until they got rid of perfectly good and efficient tram systems in the 1950s. You didn't need to. This is the result of an earlier bad government decision.

Last time I was in Glasgow, just before covid, the centre was full of buses chucking out black smoke.

The buses are one of the worst culprits.
