Hydrogen is never a good transport fuel due to the energy density issue.

@itchyvet It's the smoke and noise that attracts the crowds. Introduced in 1960, the 22 Deltic locomotives replaced 55 steam locomotives. But the 22 locomotives had 55 generator sets between them, so they might just as well have ordered 55 new steam locomotives. Unfortunately BR had messed up the design and construction of the prototype Class 8 Duke of Gloucester and its "teething troubles" were not sorted out until well into the 1980s; after its current refurbishment it will be more powerful than the Deltics which replaced the original steam locomotives.

@tigerseye73 internal combustion engines are on the way out anyway now, apart from aircraft. They are going the way of reciprocating steam engines.

@jackuzi8252 These engines were used in BR Class 55 locomotives. 22 locomotives had 55 engines between them. They needed a lot of maintenance, which is why they were quickly replaced by the class 43 which ran in pairs on at each end of the train.

Why hasn't anyone considered using hydrogen carbides? These are liquid at room temperature.
