Greta should be happy, though. The war on carbon will have casualties, but I am still trying to find a scientific explanation for the theory. There ought to be plenty of potential for internal UK air services because, apart from the main routes from London, rail travel in Britain has been neglected for decades. Cross country routes are particularly awful. Virgin aggravated the problem when it took over the Cross Country franchise and invested in a fleet of unsuitable trains, intended for a revised timetable which it was obvious was impossible to keep to and lasted just three months. It is not much fun sitting in carriages with a pervasive smell of poo and a large diesel engine growling away under the floor, and having to check one's luggage every time the train stops at a station, to make sure that someone is not about to walk off with it. However, internal services which do not connect to the hub airports are inevitably going to lose potential traffic. Travel to Exeter and the west from Heathrow or Gatwick is a pain. Other regional centres such as Newcastle and Edinburgh have direct services from mainland Europe which are useful. I hope they get back in the air soon.
