"The archeology checks out"--70 A.D. the temple was destroyed and much of Jerusalem with it. The Jews fled to the surrounding regions, where they either remained Jews or became converts to Christianity. Much later, in the 7th century, some of the people in those regions became Moslems. Centuries later, the Turkic converts to Judaism from the conquered Khazarian empire were scattered into regions of (mostly) Russian and European areas, where they intermarried and put down roots. They became known as the Ashkenazi, many of whom migrated into Palestine, especially during and after World War II
