The British used creeping barrages all the way back in the peninsular war. Canadians would tell you they won the war even though they only had one corps in 1918. The British Army had 25 infantry corps in 1918

Creeping barrages were being used well before Vimy Ridge — by the French at Verdun, British on the Somme, and even earlier experiments by the Royal Artillery in late 1915. Yes, Currie and the Canadian Corps executed it very well at Vimy — but they didn’t invent or perfect the tactic. The British had already been developing it with increasing sophistication since the Somme in 1916. For example, the 18th (Eastern) Division used a coordinated creeping barrage effectively on 1 July 1916 — nine months before Vimy.
