  17. My grandfather was in the British Army and landed in France in November 1914 so he was an Old Contemptible. He was wounded at the Somme in 1916 and also fought at Passchendaele in 1917. He was finally wounded by a shell in 1918 and got a medal for his actions but I can’t remember which one.

  18. It’s actually a misconception that soldiers spent months in frontline trenches. Units would usually be in the frontline for about 5 days and then be sent back to the relatively quiet support fire reserve trenches before being withdrawn from the line for a few weeks. Obviously this can change when a big offensive starts up.
