I would point out that though the Europeans didn’t take the Ottoman claim to Roman-ness seriously, the Chinese did, and continued to refer to the Ottomans as “Romans”.

@BulanGoldstein What do you mean by Anatolia? Most of the coast continued to be Greek-speaking until the Late Modern Period, and there were tons of Greeks on the coasts of Anatolia and Constantinople until the Greek Genocide and the Greek-Turkish population transfers during and after WW1.

@BulanGoldstein The problem is that we don’t know where his body went either. It was never found. There were some clothing the Turks claimed were from the Emperor, but nothing beyond that. IMO, it’s kind of like the entire debate over whether Hitler actually shot himself. He might not have, but we have no evidence either way, so the most likely thing that happened was what people claimed immediately after the event.
