“The Chinese Elite think in terms of Centuries.” Remembers One-Child Policy. Hmm.... The “think in centuries” part is honestly kind of overblown and is the perception is partially a product of Chinese Propaganda. I would also point out a minor point that, as a Korean, I doubt Japan would be a Chinese Ally even with a honorable government due to the pains of WW2. Korea still hates Japan due to its occupation by the Japanese. Ireland still hates Britain from the Potato famine. Arguably, the hatred amongst the South Slavs goes back to at least the rise of the Ottoman Empire, several centuries ago. Some wounds never properly heal.

@jasperbudiono295 Made in China 2025 is not really working. China was trying to make itself independent in terms of tech imports (their largest import in terms of $ are computer chip components) and make themselves leaders in things like 5G and take over the data infrastructure. China is importing as many computer chips as it ever has, and Hwawei was kicked out of its ambitions to build out 5G. Chinese exports are increasing right now, primarily in medical equipment, and due to COVID. It’s not a sustainable boom. The reason the trade war failed was very simple: It was “Phase 1”. The Chinese inevitably reneged on the Phase 1 deal, giving reasons for Trump to enact more sanctions. At least that was the plan. Truth be told, neither China nor the US ‘won’ the trade war. Both the US and China took major hits, but because Trump lost the election and because of covid, the two sides effectively signed a temporary truce.

The first day Joe came into office he fucked the Canadians over by canning the Keystone XL. Yeah, he’s not going well to diplomacy.

@pababoyM2 It doesn’t take a genius to achieve enormous economic growth by dumping money into infrastructure and opening your economy to trade. Tsarist Russia also had enormous economic growth despite not really being run all that well.

@agentc7020 Trump basically let Putin do what he wanted in Belarus and Ukraine.

@leon-jj9dv Also, India only entered the Global Market in the 90s, while China did in the 70s. Yes, State Policy did speed things up in China, but it would have happened regardless without a heavy-handed approach- and possibly more sustainably, since China’s economy is unbalanced due to excessive spending on investment having created a massive real estate bubble.

@Amaling Freaking Trudeau supported Keystone XL. The support for Keystone XL amongst the political class was nearly unanimous. So, yes, it's still a slap on the face for Canadians.

@oreodepup Germany did not have a large degree of influence over Poland or Greece until fairly recently (after the reunification of Germany).

@Amaling Doesn't change my point. Also, all it does really is make oil more expensive, slightly lowering demand but making it much harder for Alberta to export crude, increasing overall NA imports. If Biden cared about his allies as he pretends he does, it wouldn't have been a Day 1 decision. He would have called up Trudeau for a meeting first to work out some kind of compromise.

@kevinwu193 Then at minimum, it wouldn’t have taken 30 YEARS to undo the policy- LONG after birth rates fell below replacement. Now, it’s simply too late. Any hope of demographic recovery would take at least half a century to fix. Assuming it even works.
