@danaanderson4511 In practice, it means any bill needs a 60% majority to pass. Considering Republicans generally have had control of the House and/or Senate, the tactic benefits the Democrats more.

@mentos93 There is no mandate that there will only ever BE 2 parties. The issue is that no one ever votes for secondary parties because ‘it’s a wasted vote.’ Also, systems where multiple parties are favoured (ie. not First-past-the-post) rely on shaky political coalitions. For example, the next German election seems likely to either force the CDU to unite with multiple left wing parties, including those far more radical than the SPD, or force a union with AfD. Both options suck. Under the current situation in the US, a grand coalition across the aisle would be impossible. Instead, you would have a bloc of conservatives, and a bloc of liberals, just in separate parties instead of 2 giant ones. The primary difference is that whatever party you vote for now represents your interests slightly more. But the President is the leader of the largest party of the coalition (so Trump or Biden), and everyone generally plays ball within their coalition to avoid breaking it up. Congratulations! You’re now back at Square 1.

@Damariobros Ah yes, because ‘democracy’ means you need to be able to pass everything without bipartisan support because you have 50% of the Senate (not even 51%, as the VP is appointed, not elected.) There was a time where US politics wasn’t so polarized that you were actually expected to negotiate with people from the the other side to pass legislation instead of everyone voting in line with the party 100% of the time. This goes for both parties. Thing is that the post-2016 shift in the electoral college map means that the GOP should theoretically have 50 senators just off the safe-likely GOP states (not including the swing states). The GOP haven’t done that because of the 2022 flop and the blue waves in 2020 and 2018. One good election cycle for the Republicans and the Senate could permanently be in GOP hands. And then the filibuster will REALLY be necessary for the Democrats.

@Damariobros Well, the GOP can’t filibuster judges because the Dems removed the filibuster for the judiciary. Which gave Trump 3 Supreme Court Judges to choose. I don’t think the filibuster hurt Democrats more.
