  1. Considering Trump’s obsession over the Southern Border, Panama makes sense. Greenland less so, but Denmark’s involvement only lasts as long as they’re not independent… and Greenland has been pushing hard for independence.

  2. The Panama Canal is the only part that would really add much occupation cost, and only because the US would have to deal with the drug cartels from there. For Trump, that seems to be a *feature*, not a bug. Republicans have been clamouring for a security intervention in Mexico.

  4.  @danielc196  The issue is that if the US doesn’t have any real reason to maintain strong allies in a deglobalized world, there’s no strong incentive to stop naked US imperialism. We saw the flip side of the coin of that with the Iraq War.

  5. Zeihan is right about Greenland- until it declares independence. And that looks more and more likely. Denmark is trustworthy, but is an Independent Greenland? Or will they sell themselves to the highest bidder? (China?)

  6. @ The issue with Mexico is that Mexico doesn’t want US forces ‘helping’ the Mexicans. Mexico isn’t really cooperating with the US. At all. —— Panama Canal isn’t actually a big land route due to the Darien Gap- it just now allows US forces to attack cartels from the Southern direction.
