@lindasidle2723 that is sad he is not proud of his heritage. I think now that people are more open, the availability of DNA, and computer technology people will learn more where the come from.

@lisaellis2593 actually, they have traced some melungeons back to the first slaves in Virginia. (I won't say America because slaves were in Florida with the Spanish since the 1500s) I have DNA matches to John Gowen & Margaret Cornish who were some of the first. An English ship stole them off a Portuguese ship headed to Mexico.

@kingsman8475 I never heard of those people. Very interesting. My 4th great grandfather came from Mexico. I may look into that. It is similar that they are a cultural vs just being biracial mixed. Although, melungeons are triracial

That is amazing. I so want to purchase some land my ancestors owned unfortunately I can't get all my family to move with me

This is true but I am not sure it is true with all. I know the Goin family has traced their family back to the English ship called the White Lion in 1619. 20+ slaves were taken from a Portuguese ship that had kidnapped them from Africa. I believe that is where the Portuguese came from. There was a Portuguese colony in Africa so some may actually be mixed with Portuguese
3
@Nightbird1914 you are absolutely right about that. The Goins DNA project traced their origin to a man named John Geaween & a woman named Margaret Cornish in 1619.
3
There are many family ancestry lines. The Goins family has done a DNA/research study and has traced their family to the 20+ slaves that were on a Portuguese ship and was pirated by the English ship, the White Lion on 1619. John Geaween & Margaret Cornish. His line married with Cherokee. I also have DNA matches with Sizemore who have Cherokee.

It is a political government overthrow and I agree it is sad

My family lived near the Clinch River in Hawkins county TN

Loved the story.m! You should contact Peter Santenello on YouTube to make a video together. He wants to make a video on the Appalachians. More people would find your channel

@Rachel it depends on how much and from how far ago. Every generation you lose 50% of your parents DNA and it is random what 50% you get. So one sister may get different dna results from another. I have also heard it can show up as Asian

Have you done a DNA test? My family is from the area as well and I never heard of them before until I found many matches with them. I asked one of my matches who was a Goins if he had heard of them and he had not. Turns out his family was part of a very important DNA study

I agree, amazing job! I also love the sound of your voice. I look forward to more videos

@Texas1836 they want people to use the word indigenous because there are groups of black people trying to say they want their "land back." It is a political power grab
1
@donnielaws7020 i agree, people are trying to remove themselves from the craziness of what is going on
1
That is interesting. I haven't heard much on that but would like to hear more.
1
@shanaguilar8352 you are 100% correct. I wish more people could see it

The Goins family did a DNA/research study and they originate from the 20+ slaves brought to Virginia on the White Lion ship that was pirated from a Portuguese ship. There are videos and many books written on it. The people they originate from are John Geaween and Margaret Cornish. I have many Goins DNA matches

Is that Dwight Yoakum family drug store lol this video has me craving fried bologna & cheese sandwiches

They have actually found the first group of 20+ slaves brought to Virginia were slaves on their way to Mexico from Africa on a Portuguese ship. An English ship, called White Lion, pirated the ship and took 20+ of the 350 slaves on the ship to Virginia, the rest to another island to get medical help. Also, they were afraid of getting caught of the stolen property. They have traced the Goins family to John Geaween/Gowen/Goin & Margaret Cornish in 1619.

Cole is a very interesting name i would like to do more research on. There is a Cole family who were neighbors of Thomas Jefferson. They discussed abolishing slavery with him. It is also rumored Sally Hemings daughter married a man from a Cole family.
