@PrettyGoodLookin some of my ancestors come from Virginia in the mid 1600s and a Melungeon area of Tennessee in the early 1800s. I had never heard of Melungeon until I had a DNA test done and have several DNA matches to people who claim Melungeon heritage. The Goins have traced their ancestors to two enslaved people who were on the White Lion ship in 1619 that took 20 slaves off a Portuguese slave ship headed to what is now Mexico. My guess is some of the slaves on the Portuguese ship escaped to the Tennessee/Kentucky/North Carolina mountains. The ship was coming from a Portuguese colony in Africa. They were probably mixed.

@PrettyGoodLookin the Melungeon dna matches I have are Goins and Sizemore. Both have African ancestry and Sizemore has more Native American .

If you haven't done a DNA test with Ancestry for them I would do it. They may have DNA matches that will give you the ancestry history and location. A man name Jack Goins has done much research on his family line and a DNA project was done as well. He is a good melungeon historian. They have traced the line to two slaves from Africa on the 1619 ship White Lion. There is much research on that as well. Good Luck

If you haven't done a DNA test with Ancestry I highly recommend it. You will probably have "cousins" with melungeon ancestry that may tell you more about your tree.

@PAUL-em4tj just because you ignore something it doesn't make it go away. I think everyone should know their family history
