  3. I have not done much research on my German ancestors because I have focused mainly on my Virginia, Italian, and Irish ancestors. When I think of Swarthy I think of my Virginia/Tennessee, Italian, and Mexican/Native American ancestors. Swarthy was described on some of their Civil War descriptions. I never really thought of swarthy for German people. This made me Google to confirm which members and I came across the FreeAfricanAmericans website that showed white women who enslaved/indentured themselves in contracts in order to marry and free African men. I would love for you to do a video on the subject. With all the division in the world today and the assumption mixed race babies of the earliest generations must have come from rape situations, I think stories of love would be a great video.

  4. Wow! Thank you for this video. Don't let others try and discourage your searching for your family's history. My grandparents moved to San Francisco in 1947 from Chicago. I had heard of the Japanese going to camps but never the Italians. Maybe my mom never knew because she was born in 1940 and I don't know if we had family in California before 1947 but I would assume there would still be some discrimination and prejudice even after they were released. I know she hated our curly hair all her life and constantly straightened it. I thought she had a pretty nose but she hated that as well. This gives me some idea of maybe that is why.

  5. The older generations are so much stronger than the younger generations. It is sad to see how fragile our people have become. Seems like many live in a bubble and if America faces a threat of danger I am not sure we will come out of it okay.

It is cute her door matches her neighbor's and the outside screened in porch with partially open is a fabulous idea. I noticed her little dog picture in her living room.   9. I am looking forward to this series. There is a video by a writer who wrote about her melungeon ancestry. It is an hour long but great for research. She is entertaining and the time goes by fast. I believe the video is Kinfolks: searching for my Melungeon ancestry. She is an older blonde lady.

  17. Awesome video. Great story. You are right. He should do a movie about her and bring awareness to the Melungeon history. Another good story is the Pleasant vs Pleasant story in Virginia. A Quaker freed his slaves apon his death but of course some of his descendants fought this while others wanted them freed. The case lead to a important law change.

  18. Because America is made from multiple heritages most of us are mix with something, some more than others. It is sad that this should be a time of uniting and sharing but instead it has become more divisive. The more people see videos like these hopefully we will become united as a country. Our country has so much possibility. I remember in school each week we would study a heritage. We would dress like them and bring a dish/food to have a potluck. Our differences is what could make this country the best.

  19. I am wondering if it was to distinguish between white people and freed slaves. In doing research I have noticed people with the same names but the only way to distinguish which family they are from was the skin color on census and other legal documents.

  25. Great video. I am sad to see how focused people still are about skin color. Gen X really didn't focus on that but it seems all the turmoil of the 60s never went away. It was just silent for a couple decades. I have always thought of Jesus as middle eastern but like so many aspects of Christianity, like Jesus's birthday, has been changed to bring more people into the church. The religions that did not celebrate pagan holidays nor allow idols like the cross/statues were considered non Christian not so long ago. Unfortunately, the corruption of many churches has contributed to the horrible society we live in today where people started to reject religion but has been replaced with hypersexuality and lawlessness.

  27. It is very true that focus on skin color and gate-keeping heritage has become an obsession. History is definitely repeating itself with propaganda and censorship. Hitl*r used public schools to brainwash his "Hitl*r's Youth" program. Which also seems to be happening today. Unfortunately, during the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s people seemed to be getting along but that is when people were "colorblind". Unfortunately, people refer to that as being racist today and division is being pushed daily. Controlling people's speech and encouraging one group to be allowed to say words that are restricted to others is destructive. If a word is bad it should not be said equally. In Hitl*r's day certain groups were focused on, were said to be evil, and the reason for the pains of the nation. It was said the Jews were rich and causing the rest of the country to be poor. It was said they were diseased and barbaric animals. After the Jews they went after other groups, disabled and mentally impaired, homosexuals, Gypsies, Jehovah Witnesses, on and on. It always starts with one group but then the targets grow. We are definitely seeing history repeat itself and it is horrifying to watch!

  38. They have actually found the first group of 20+ slaves brought to Virginia were slaves on their way to Mexico from Africa on a Portuguese ship. An English ship, called White Lion, pirated the ship and took 20+ of the 350 slaves on the ship to Virginia, the rest to another island to get medical help. Also, they were afraid of getting caught of the stolen property. They have traced the Goins family to John Geaween/Gowen/Goin & Margaret Cornish in 1619.

  39. I think DNA is EXTREMELY important and the absolute best gift I have ever gotten. I had no idea I had Lithuania or Mexican heritage. The man on my grandmother's birth certificate was not her biological father. It showed me where in Ireland my grandmother's parents were from. Using the DNA matches helps to guide me where to look for my documentation. It confirmed my biological father. I think everyone should do it.

  41. Cole is a very interesting name i would like to do more research on. There is a Cole family who were neighbors of Thomas Jefferson. They discussed abolishing slavery with him. It is also rumored Sally Hemings daughter married a man from a Cole family.
