  3.  @garylester3976  It was Bush who coined the totally untrue phrase 'religion of peace' - he was one of these 'one of the world's great religions' apologists for Islam. 'Crusade' is a term used to mean any great collective effort to achieve something worthwhile, and understood as such by everyone except Muslims who see it exclusively as a war against them. It was always 'a small minority of extremists', NEVER the core tenets of islam that was blamed for terrorism. The reverence for Islam in Iraq and Afghanistan by coalition forces demonstrated it wasn't against Islam. Servicemen were punished for 'abusing' Qurans, and Sharia was explicitly inserted into the new constitution of Iraq. Obama removed all references to Jihad and Islam from FBI counter-terror training material. Moreover, the establishments of the West have been happy to use the term 'Islamophobia' to demonize non-Muslims as a protection for islam against criticism.

One of the problems is that Islam comes in so many different guises - Barbary pirates, Saracens, Ottomans, Seljuks, Fatimids, Abbasids, Moors, Tatars, Arabs,Turks etc that the problem isn't identifiable to the ordinary person. In England we didn't develop a folk memory because Catholic Spain and France emerged as greater foes, and the Turks were seen as an ally against the Russians. Then the Arabs against the Turks. In India and elsewhere in the Empire Muslims came under our rule and many colonial Brits from that perspective saw no danger. Too many have taken on board the politically correct history that the Crusades were the worst thing that ever happened.
