  1. Mecca and Medina "hugely important cities from an economic perspective from early on in human history"? Why did the Ancient Greeks, Romans and Persians not know about them then? Looks like they developed AFTER the coming of Islam, and not before it, and just happen to be near trade routes rather than actually on them.
