  6. 'Citizens' by Simon Schama was a bore fest - the first book I ever left unfinished. I had hoped as it was described as a chronicle of the French Revolution it would make a good introduction. Disappointing.

  31. It's an error to say Jesus is in the Qur'an, Tom. A character called Isa, who is purportedly a Muslim prophet is in the Qur'an - he is the Muslim Jesus, not the Jesus Christ of the New Testament, which is the only Holy Book where he can be found.

  33.  @1526andrews  It's too far. Space flight is the difference between going round the M25 (orbit) and then zooming off to Italy. The radiation belts around the Earth can only be circumvented by going up through the poles - but that isn't part of the story. Armstrong was very reluctant to talk about it - look at the after flight press conference - when you'd think he would be telling everyone about it. Aldrin punched someone in the face when they said he didn't go to the Moon. Isn't that the action of someone who's been found out?

  44.  @TheMakersRage  He loved war, but going round and round defeating this army or that army over again just pointlessly lost lives. Leading land armies only got him so far, and he never had a decisive victory after 1809, he wasn't invincible. The constant opposition by Great Britain finally brought him down, and the Royal Navy in general and Nelson in particular was a large part of that victory, which is why you are loving this series.

Yes the American War of Independence isn't much known about here in the UK, I had come across it in boyhood, but even though I did A Level History I had never heard of the War of 1812 until I was into my 20s (1980s). You'd have thought burning down the White House would have been part of our 'national imagination' rather than a forgotten incident.
