The 'framework for subordinating Christians and Jews' [dhimmification] is not 'sophisticated', it a codified system of oppression that resulted in millions of people converting to Islam in the centuries following the permanent occupation of their homelands. The Christian world was well aware that they had been assailed by a religion by the time Syria and Egypt fell let - alone Spain - over a third was lost, the most important third with the Holy Land.
