  1. French rather than French speakers married into the Anglo-Saxon aristocracy, and they were still speaking French into the C15th. Look for the French names, Beauchamp, Beaufort, Curzon, Fortescue, Herbert, Grenville, Grosvenor, Montague, Neville, Spencer. Any name with the prefix Fitz.
