  1. Macer is unbelievably naive in his belief in democracy and progressivism being achievable in Syria. Islam is inherently anti-democratic - law is created by Allah, not by man. Homosexuality is a CRIME in Sharia law, punishable by death. Also: "The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property – either as a child, a wife, or a concubine – must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men." Winston Churchill 1899. Strong man politics is the only alternative to Sharia driven theocratic rule. Assad, rather than being the obstacle to democracy, is the bulwark against Islamic medievalism. Without his like (Saddam Hussein, Qaddafi) Jihadist forces emerge to reset the clock to 632 AD. Macer would be better off focusing totally on Ukraine.

  2.  @rodmarker2071 You may wish to defend Islam by whataboutery, but we are talking about Syria where the problem is Islam. Muslims will not work for democracy; they will use democracy to further Islam, not limit it.

  3.  @katiehettinger7857  The 'he's been there' argument doesn't fly. The essential issue is the difference between Muslims and Islam. He's met Muslims but he doesn't know Islam. Into the mix is the ethnic element. Arabs, Kurds and Turks. Islamic State identified as Muslims first, Arabs, second, while the Kurds were Kurdish first and Islamic second. Review what happened in Egypt in 2011-2013. With the connivance of Obama, his supposed ally, Hosni Mubarak was overthrown after mass protests. "Hurrah the dictator has been removed, 'the Arab Spring' is the desire for democracy", we were told by the media. Elections then put the Muslim Brotherhood in power, (Mohammad Morsi) who then proceeded to make that permanent with a Sharia constitution. The biggest mass protests in history then followed resulting in an army coup the removal of Morsi and the installation of a secular strong man (Abdel Fattah el-Sisi), and the cycle was complete. Although all the players maintain their Muslim identity, when Sharia rule is on the cards the human reaction is 'no thanks'. Removing dictators in the Islamic world unleashes a far worse beast.
