  1. The term 'superpower' is entirely anachronistic in the 18thC. The loss of the American colonies was really only 'catastrophic' for the Ancien Regime in France, and led directly to decades of violence in Europe. At the time the West Indies were considered more valuable economically to Britain. The American oligarchs thought they could avoid taxation, but ironically having lost the protection of the Royal Navy on the high seas they merely replaced the modest taxation of Britain with the substantial extortions of Muslim pirates.
