Also Alexander's conquests outlived him, Napoleons didn't. Astonishing there are so many who believe in Napoleon's greatness.

He was defeated and exiled twice.

Very satisfying.

He's my favourite captive.

@@nogent4213 Without Bonaparte's megalomania there would have been no war. No countries would have threatened France without first their revolutionary ambition, and then Bonaparte's. Although he did not rule France he was the mainstay of their military adventurism in the 1790s.

Britain had already gone through this 150 years earlier. No one wanted another pointless bloodbath.

He was born on an island and died on one - in captivity.

No, the Americans were defeated in the War of 1812 while Britain was still contending with Bonaparte.

@54032Zepol He came back because he wasn't hanged. Big mistake.

@suntzu94 The British Army helped liberate Spain and Portugal, and funded the coalition against Napoleon. What guff are you talking about?

@@nogent4213 1797 is in the 1790s. 'the british could never tolerate France to own the port of Antwerp'....and? It didn't belong to them. France wasn't dismembered in 1815 when Paris was occupied by the allies. Ironically, it was Britain who held in check any extreme retributions by the Prussians and Russians - had those powers got hold of Bonaparte he would certainly have been hanged.

@@nogent4213 Give thanks that France was defeated in the 19thC, and Germany in the 20thC.

@igordupuy9213 The Zulu War was not authorised by the British government, but was a product of the local authority. The Zulus had a massive army ready for war and not far from the British and Boer settlements. it was seen as a threat to be neutralised. The Zulus had originated elsewhere in Africa, and had gone south attacking other African tribes as they went. Don't worry about it.

@igordupuy9213 The war ended once Napoleon and France were defeated. Doesn't that tell you who was pursuing the war?

Would French be better for you?
1
No he had to re-defeat his enemies, and eventually lost the war. Oliver Cromwell was more successful; he conquered England, Scotland and Ireland.
