  15. France was beaten on the battlefield three times by Marlborough and the myth of French invincibility destroyed. French intentions of invading Austria thwarted. Very few conflicts have total victory like 1815 and 1945.

When there was a real war Britain kicked France out of North America and India - the American War was a dogs breakfast of confusion, really expecting a rebellion to fizzle out if it wasn't opposed too vigourously, which had the opposite effect. When Yorktown fell the British government didn't even know there were operations going on there communication distances were so great.

  58. what he says at the start - nobody in Britain talks about the British army being the finest in the 18thc - just that when it was vital to win they did. America wasn't an important war - the West indies was far a more valuable possession.
