Initially, rather than go for one of the offensive Crusades with all the pitfalls of assumed aggression, I suggest the defence of Rhodes in 1480, as subject matter - it has a victorious ending, but could start with a backdrop of the disaster of Constantinople 27 years earlier. The Knights Hospitallers 'star' (so no rabbit holes for Templar oddities). I knew of this event in the early 1970s and imagined it as a movie vehicle for Charlton Heston as Grand Master Pierre d'Aubusson. It would provide a reminder that the struggle continued long after the archetypal Crusader Richard I's era, and be a nod to the fact that the enemy is still intent on invasion to this day.
