Not a word of criticism for the monster who was the architect of his misery.

When there is no one to gainsay you any tales will have listeners enthralled.
27
what a rogue he was, all those men died for his ego.

@HeadsFullOfEyeballs Yes Napoleon. Some men were cursing their mothers and wishing they had never been born. There must have been a heck of an indoctrination going on for them not to go to the true source of their suffering.
7
@mojo9291 a complete devotion to the killing of young French men. His ambition ironically led to the the emergence of Germany as a war machine later in the century and in the following one. Respect for him is foolishly misplaced.

Such happenstance on the battlefield. They were different men in those days.

Not me

@sweden7675 It's two tunes: 'The girl I left behind me' and 'The British Grenadiers', but I don't know the reference to the Prescott volunteers and Colonel Fraser
3
@solwen Britain had a constitutional monarchy even then - the King reigned he did not rule.
3
@Hurlebatte there should be a comma after 'you' though
3
Yes - Napoleon is still considered a hero in France rather than the villain he was.
3
@sweden7675 Being Swedish did you first hear of Waterloo through Abba? and next from that song?
2
@sweden7675 Good man - do me a favour and keep Sweden Swedish

@monashsq4001 Napoleon himself declared war on the French Republic: he crowned himself Emperor - did you miss that detail? Far from abolishing monarchies he crowned his own family members. German soldiers had no business dying in Russia for the sake of this ego maniacal upstart.
2
they also tell of how the real heroes are in the cemeteries. Only a small percentage of soldiers willingly moved forward into harms way they tended not to make it out.
2
Why did he believe English fisherman were aiding the 'Servants of Satan'?
1
@universalis8208 That's a fair point, except Napoleonic France had no power of coercion over his memoirs. The fact he was a German (Bavaria later joined the allies against Napoleon) is why I believe he was held back from criticising Napoleon only by his own (subverted) mind.
1
@RRobespierre1794 who was convincing Napoleon that Alexander had to be defeated?
1
@solwen Nobody wanted the ideal republic cutting peoples heads off thank you. Did you get the memo that Napoleon reinstated the monarchy crowned himself and family members?
1
@gerardosalazar161 Britain has what is called an 'unwritten' constitution. This makes it superior to written ones, with a 'year dot' beginning and have to be formulated as it was developed over centuries of struggle, convention and case law. There would be no US Constitution without it.
