Actually if Christianity specifically had not come along we would be living in a much more unequal world as Christianity's central message was a very controversial one at the time - that we are all equal. Those Christian ideals laid the foundation for most of western society. Additionally, the Christian churches were the first to establish universities - almost every university and college founded in the U.S. and Europe until the mid-19th century was founded by some religious organisation. Studying and questioning the faith and the natural world was central to the religion, quite opposite to what you suggest.

@kateybear8323 Yeah Jesus didn't say that lol The Gospels are the main deal, they are the core belief system. Including St Paul's writings into the New Testament was a decision by a council centuries ago, but no one reads that over the Gospel teachings. In fact 'Paul's Doctrine' is taken with a grain of salt because people understand the context.

Most Christians who actually know their faith know hell isn't a thing. Jesus never mentioned it in the way popular culture came to define it. It was the Greeks years after Jesus who intertwined the ancient greek belief in Hades and incorporated it into Jesus' teachings. But it's not what Jesus preached. That said, Jesus did speak of a day of judgement. And I don't think believing that you'll be held accountable for your actions in life is a bad thing.
