But it is harder to have a trace of the ascendancy from peasants in most cases the more we go back in the generations. While for the nobility there are record of the history of the family. It is easier to trace back until Charlemagne , than to the peasant Johan living in a little village at some kilometers of the castle of Charlemagne.

@joseh3564 French are descendants of peoples living in Gaul before the roman invasion, with some addition of roman blood, and later of Germanic blood, some Visigoth, and after Franks. But you have to keep in mind that peoples of Gauls were millions ( one of the biggest population in Europe ) while Franck were at best some tens thousand of peoples , and in most case they were living separated from the common peoples by making the nobility. Military invasion of a great country ( like France or Egypt ) does not mean replacement of the population.

It is easier if by using genealogy, you find a little noble ancestor. All the nobility in Europe is related to Charlemagne.

@BillGreenAZ Because Franks were the military leaders and kings after their conquest of the country. Because the king, and his lords, was Frank then it became the kingdom of the Franks, while the great majority of the population was not Frank. "history is written by the winner" One of the "tradition" of the Franks was to marry with women of the country for making their family more related to the population of the country. Women with noble roman ascendancy where of great value, like the wife of Clovis, it makes their children related to roman emperors. On the other hand a guy like Charlemagne , had several children with native women, this is why it is said that a great part of the French , now , are related to Charlemagne, but not in his time.

@naggu1243 i have found a family tree of European nobility, and i can't trace back to Cesar with the data they have, while i have some other Roman emperors in the ancestries , but younger. On the other hand "i can" reclaim the Persian Empire of the Sassanian .

@candicehoneycutt4318 Yes, it was already made by members of my family, but the more we go deeper, the more it is difficult to find informations for common peoples. When we found someone before 1700 we are happy and lucky. While nobles keep track of their lineage, and their are tens thousands of records .of nobles in my country, that allow to trace until Charlemagne, or other royal/imperial lineage, made by peoples working on genealogy. Then when you fall on a far ancestry from a noble family , like a daughter of a lord, it is the jackpot and the door to a new world.

@paulbrower4265 The franks have colonized the old Gaul and the west border of germany, because Frank were in this part of the Europe. The title of Kingdom of the Franks came from Clovis who had his kingdom in a part of what will become France, and married with a noble woman living in the future France. Franks comes from the west of Germany , near Belgium and Nederland, before taking the power in Gaul. This is why the country know as France , is called France, and not the Germany. But it is not related to the population, only to the rulers.

@J6_2.0When I don't understand to what you answer... it is not related to what i say. The main genetic pool of French is among peoples living in Gaul along the antiquity. This is my point. You are making an absolute, that is not an absolute, your "every" is wrong, the study speaks about probabilities. If my sources are right i should have ancestry from nobles of every countries in Europe (and even outside), that gives the possibility to share at least one common ancestry with a lot of Europeans peoples , but it does not make me the descendant of all the farmers with descendants who lived 1000 years ago.

@J6_2.0When ok i will take a concrete example in the tree from the nobles ancestries. I go deep in the tree around 1000 years ago, 25 generations from my last noble ancestry. There is a bunch of Irish or Scottish names, around ten, but there is the place for a maximum 4000 ancestries between non Irish/Scottish names. It gives a maximum of around 4000 ancestries from Ireland or Scotland from this part of of this generation. Else if there was only 4000 living Irish + Scottish nobles or not with descendants , i can't be related to all the Irish or Scottish living at this time by this ancestors. In addition given the number there should have some double references, it will reduce the effective number of ancestries form this cluster of ancestries. If there was around 500 000 Irish at this time, we are far from all the living peoples of this time, it is only around 1% of the total Irish population as ascendants of my last noble ascendant.

Charlemagne had a lot of children with noble mother or more common mother, including bastards. And with genealogy we can see if we can trace back to specific personality, it is not random guess for Charlemagne and Genghis Khan.

Muhamad is not the ancestor of Europeans peoples , because this is not his direct descendant who get into the European nobility. Because the connection between Europeans peoples and Arab leaders was made along the invasion of spain with marriages of descendant of caliph and spanish royalty and nobility. The Arab leaders who came in spain were not descendants of muhamad, but of the caliph Uthman. Yes he was married with two daughters of muhamad, but the leaders in spain are the descendants from another wife. Some generations after Uthman there was marriage between Arab and Spanish nobility, introducing some arab lineage in the high christian nobility in Spain, later. And because marriages are made all along Europe between noble families, the descendants of Uthman spread all along the christian Europe by its nobility. Having at least two far connections with low nobility in my family tree , then they are part of my ancestries. And there is another lineage of caliphs with the Almohad family coming from north africa. This is among a wide list in my family tree, for the noble part of kings, queens, emperors from everywhere in Europe from Spain to Armenia, from Norway to Italy, just because a daughter of a poor little lord was married to a commoner around 300-400 years ago. And for the fun i made a research, and found that the French king Louis XIV is connected to Uthman, and the Queen Elisabeth II too. Then there is a possibility that a big part of the Europeans are related to the caliph Uthman , but not muhamad.
