The West ? easy from historical point of view for the Europe : this is the military "bunker" in Europe that was not invaded by external invader after the 11th century ( while pushing the Muslims out of Spain in the south ) . But it was a land of "internal" wars. And it covers the west countries of the cold war, from global point of view, with majors actors : France, Great Britain , Spain , Germans/ Austrians , Italians. Until the French Revolution, all the rulers of this countries were parents by marriages. Until Protestantism they were under the catholic church. Napoleon has spread the democratic ideal of the Republican French Revolution in all countries else Great Britain. etc...

@helgaioannidis9365 US and USSR were allied with Great Britain. Then it is not an invasion against all countries, the USA came with the british.

@shaft9000 Huns and muslims have invaded western Europe after the 11th century? Yes it is more complicated but it is a synthetic definition from an historic perspective.
