The monster was the captain who took them there in such shit ships with such shit provisions

TheSchultinator I think you'll find the best icebreakers in the world are Russian.

@TheRealBamboonga it was in answer to the supposition that capitalism produces the best ships capable of going to the artic fella. Context is a wonderful thing. And the Russians have been pretty impressive when it comes to technology, particularly when you consider they were a totally peasant country less than 100 years ago with no industrial output at all.

Drakon590 Wikipedia is American, West do you expect? Must of their population can barely speak English

Carlos Saraiva they weren't the most technologically advanced at all. They were defunct battleships fitted with huge defunct railway steam engines that produced 25hp. Much smaller more modern maritime specific steam engines available at the time were capable of producing ten times that. They bought the cheapest food available, if you pay peanuts you get monkeys, and that shit still goes on all over the world, it's called under regulated capitalism. Look at Boeing outsourcing the mcas system on the 737 max to Indian programmers as an example. Or enron, or lehmann brothers and the 2008 crash, or the polluted and toxic water supply in flint michigan. If you think that shit, or promoting idiots to positions of power, is restricted to England you're brainwashed. Look at trump.

Carlos Saraiva they were a long long way from the most technologically advanced of their time. The whole thing was done cheaply, as is unregulated capitalism's wont.

TheRealBamboonga ok - you don't bring your most advanced technology into an environment like that? I'd say that's exactly what they do in space exploration. And war most of the time, at least when it comes to ships planes and tanks. Less so for the grunts I guess. As for those ships, they were fairly old sail ships retrofitted with defunct railway steam engines. There were far more modern ships available at the time with maratime specific stream engines that were smaller, lighter and so much more efficient they could produce ten times the power. It's pretty clear that those ships, like the provisions, were bought on the cheap. The problem with the bidding process is when it's run solely by beaurocratic bean counters, you always end up in a race to the bottom with the very cheapest thing they think they can get away with palming off on you, instead of what you actually need or what gives the best value. One example is the first incarnation of the sa80. Another is Boeing's mcas system on their 737 max's. A better idea is to consider cost as one element of the bidding process alongside value and engineering etc etc. Put it this way, if you're buying a kettle or parts for your car, do you always go for the very cheapest option?

TheRealBamboonga yeah I'm not aware that they were constructed by the bidding system but retrofitting old sailing ships with defunct salvaged railway steam engines doesn't sound like the most expensive way to source an artic voyage.

And now people inject that shit

Drakon590 Wikipedia is predominantly written by Americans, most of whom struggle not to butcher English, so how you expect them to get on with Latin out ancient Greek I don't know. Unlike Greece and most of western Europe, education is not high on the agenda in America.

People always think the latest technology is fantastic, and future generations are always amazed at how stupid they were using it. Mobile phones, for example.

@cbmtrx not least because they all died horribly. They paid the greatest cost of all, nothing could cost more than that. Cost savings on one hand does not mean efficient. As I've said, there were ships available at the time with smaller, lighter, more modern and far more efficient maritime specific steam engines that were capable of ten times the power.
