  1.  @g.f.w.6402  you seem to very patriotic to Germany. I’ve always find it interesting that so many Germans feel such a need to be overly zealous and over bearing about their patriotism, as if their national identity depended upon it. It’s almost as if the idea of a unified German national identity is so new, it must be grasped tightly with both hands and borne aloft for everyone to see, just to make sure you feel it strongly enough. This identity crisis and the search for a single coherent national identity is why Germans were so easily led into starting two world wars within a generation, and happily welcomed nationalism, fascism and the Nazis into their hearts, as it gave them something they could hang onto and nationally identify with as a German.

  2.  @Father.of.Red.China15  sorry, did Germany or did Germany not invade France though Belgium at per the schnieffen plan (although they didn’t actually follow it correctly)? Did they not spend 2 years secretly constructing a huge train station with over 20 platforms on the Belgium border for this specific purpose? Did they or did they not secretly at night build and test specific railroads for the movement of troops to achieve this years in advance? Did or did the kaiser not give Austro Hungary a blank cheque to do whatever it wanted to Serbia over the assassination of franz ferdinand, despite Serbia acquiescing to all of Austria’s ridiculous demands apart from one which they asked be sent to the international courts for arbitration? And did he or did he not have full knowledge that doing so would draw Russia and this France into the conflict? Did Anthony Eden the British foreign Secretary not make it perfectly clear to the German ambassador that if Germany invaded France Belgium the British government would have no choice but to declare war on Germany? I’m curious as to how you think Germany wasn’t at fault here, and that planning and building the infrastructure to invade France through Belgium for years and then manipulating events and allies to create an excuse to execute those plans and invading Belgium before anyone else has done a thing to Germany isn’t starting a war. Enlighten me, please. I suppose Germany didn’t start the Second World War by invading Poland either?

Obviously it was a factor but ww2 was simply a realisation of the ambitions Germany had in ww1, and was in effect the schnieffen plan done correctly. So these plans and ambitions were already over 25 years old

  8.  @g.f.w.6402  the German nation was only founded in 1871. There has been Pele speaking German in many nation states all over Central Europe. Even after Germany was founded, there were still people speaking German outside of Germany, for example in Austria, Switzerland, Hungary and Bohemia. You cannot say “where there is a German speaker, there is Germany” and use that to justify invasion. Otherwise, you would support Russia’s invasion of the Russian speaking areas of Ukraine. Saying this is justifiable in international law is utter nonsense.

  9.  @pedrolopez8057  kinda surprised her didn’t mention how much influence German enlightenment had and has on the development and culture of the USA, the manifest destiny and rugged individualism. Germans perhaps have had the biggest influence on the USA out of all European nations. This can also be seen through its dominant food culture, hamburgers, hotdogs and pretzels etc, and it’s warlike ambitions.

  12.  @g.f.w.6402  yes, I’m well aware of the history thanks having studied it extensively. I’ve read many books and attended many lectures on the subject, by professor Clarke for example. I’m probably far more well versed in it than you are. It’s interesting that you’re attempting to justify the invasion of most of Europe and the slaughter of millions with ‘international lawa’. None of this changes the simple fact that Germany started the First World War by invading France via Belgium, and started the Second World War by invading Poland, and then France through Belgium, again. In fact the Second World War was just Germany realising the ambitions of the kaiser and his government had in 1914. The EU is simply an extension of that mitteleuropa policy through economic dominance alone. However, now that Germany is rearming, it will probably be a matter of decades before the Germans once again invade Europe, especially with people like you at the helm. That’s if we make it to twenty years hence, since thanks to Germany we’re dangerously close to a Third World War.

  13.  @saba1030  the Austro-Hungarians would argue it was stated by Serbia, however it was Germany that gave Austro-Hungary a blank cheque to respond to the assassination of their arch duke in anyway they saw fit, and the Austrians had been itching for an excuse to clobber Serbia for years, especially their Field Marshall, who had asked 8 times in the year preceding to invade Serbia. Ironically it was the archduke Ferdinand who had thwarted his attempts every time, which may explain why security was so abysmal, despite good intelligence that an attempt would be made on his like that day. Regardless, Austro-Hungary would not have started shelling Serbia without Germany giving it express permission, and Germany did so knowing this would drag Russia and thus France into the conflict, enabling it to put into motion the Schnieffen plan that it has spent over 2 years building and testing infrastructure and logistics for.

Just trying to duck a question you can’t answer. I don’t hate Germany at all, in fact it’s one of my favourite countries which is why I spent so many years living there. I think they influence Germany has had on world culture is often vastly under reported, simply because it isn’t a dominant language (thankfully) and of course, because despite being so great it also loses so godamn often. Perhaps because it’s leaders are overly ambitious and have rather more hubris and ego than is good for the country, and think it’s greater than it is (it’s great enough, there’s no need to exaggerate it’s greatness).

As an Irishman the closeness of french-German relations post ww2 has always interested me, since the many conflicts between the two regions have dominated European history for the past 150 years at least. In fact Germany was funded in the hall of mirrors in Versailles at the end of the Franco-Prussian war, which of course is why the French chose the very same place to sign the terms to end ww1 .

  26.  @saba1030  I’m well aware of Clarke’s views, I’ve read his books and attended his lectures, his viewpoint is important and it’s vital that it’s considered, which is why I’m surprise to find people in the comment section calling him a German hater. As important as his views are, they aren’t the only views that need to be considered, and as much as he rightfully points out other nations responsibility for the build up to war, he does not exonerate Germany from theirs. I’ve seeing an increasing view expressed by Germans that their country was not responsible for the outbreak of war at all, ignoring the fact they planned and built infrastructure for over two years to carry out the invasions of Belgium and France and Russia, invasions they carried out without provocation.

I’m not a brexiteer, but however unfortunate it is, it was put to a democratic vote and I think it’s important that it is respected, even though i I disagree with it, do you not agree? The EU is hardly a paladin of virtue here, and is decidedly undemocratic in nature. How’s much of the German press is critical of the EU, I wonder?

Americans aren’t exactly popular around the world for the same reasons. I’ve seen English children get beaten up in Ireland just for being English. It’s not nice but it is somewhat understandable, although not condonable.

If there was some kind of event that might have happened to create an idea of a purer Germany, that expelled all those deemed to be unfit or unpure enough to live there? No, I can’t think of one. Don’t go in the winter though, it’s going to be a cold one thanks to the USA blowing up the pipeline and pushing the Ukraine war. It’s funny because Ukrainians have started complaining that they haven’t got electricity or heating now that Russia has started targeting their power grid in retaliation for the bridge and pipeline attacks, but Germans have been having to do without electricity and heating for a while bore and this winter is going to be really bad
