If they were traveling interstellar distances faster than light their knowledge of physics and technology would be indistinguishable from magic to us, we would have no hope of getting to grips with it. It would be like taking an iPad or a telsa car back to roman times and telling them to wrap their heads around how it worked and backwards engineer it. If they didn't want us to know they were here, we wouldn't know anything about them. They're not going to play hide and seek and peekaboo, the idea is ludicrous. It's life the creationists who believe that our trickster God buried dinosaur bones 6000 years ago to mess with us and test our faith. Aliens aren't going to the bother of travelling all this way to find life and play pranks on it.

  10.  @Ididntknowicouldchagethis  we'd be a protected nature reservr or zoo at the very least, life isn't that abundant, to come across an oasis of life in the uncharted backwaters of the western spiral arm of an insignificant galaxy would be incredibly rare. The first thing they would probably do would be to either exploit it or look to study and preserve it, depending on whether they were more like captain cooke or Charles Darwin. If its the latter they'd quickly come to the conclusion that we are the greatest danger to life on earth particularly with all our nasty weapons, so they would probably want to do something about that. Either way we'd know about it
