Comments by "TJ Marx" (@tjmarx) on "TikTok banned on all UK government devices" video.
Tiktok does nothing that the Meta and Google apps also don't do. We know objectively that Facebook and Instagram are being used to turn users against each other. We know objectively that twitter is used to turn users against each other. These companies make money out of division and controversy. I don't see why only tiktok should be singled out. I support banning it, but only in the context of banning all of these platforms. You can't ban one then leave it's competitors in the market doing the same things. Just to be clear btw, in yankville the reason the FBI (which is a domestic entity) cares about TikTok is because unlike meta, google, Microsoft and apple, ByteDance won't hand over user data to the FBI on request. They hate that they can't ride shotgun over citizens rights. Much is made of the law that requires Chinese companies to give information to the CCP if required on national security grounds. But whilst making that statement everyone ignores the same rules apply to yankville companies and yankvilles government. Did we all forget Snowden's revelations so quickly?

Meta say the same things in their terms for Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram. Facebook goes an extra step and says you are also agreeing to have psychological experiments conducted on you. Google say the same thing in their terms for essentially all of their products. From maps to android, to search, to nest home devices and even this very platform we're commenting on right now. Apple say the same thing in their terms for iOS devices, iCloud & homekit. Amazon say the same things in their terms of service for fire tablets, firetv, alexa prime video and the amazon app Twitter say the same things in their terms of service. Have you ever seen that single light randomly turn on without request on your nest home mini? That means the device is actively listening to the room and sending a live audio recording back to Google's servers. Alexa and Homekit devices have identical behaviour. So long as the behaviour is disclosed to the user, it's up to the user to decide if they want to begin or continue using that service. Why single out TikTok for behaviour all such platforms undertake? Edit: Heck it isn't even social platforms. Use a third party keyboard on your smart device? Bother to read the terms of service? Every third party keyboard that's NOT a single indie dev tells you explicitly in their terms that they're keylogging. There's even an explicit warning on android when changing keyboards that your keystrokes can be logged. There are so many more examples. Tiktok is a drop in the ocean.
