Where on earth did you drag Stephanie Hare out from? She doesn't appear to actually really understand what's going on. There is no contradiction in what these companies are saying. They're saying that they must respond to market forces and continue developing, but they would like the whole industry to pause for 6 months. They can't pause unless their competitors also pause, else they will lose their market edge and will not be doing right by their shareholders. The problem is not that AI might become too intelligent, we're generations away from anything approaching genuine AI let alone something more intelligent than us. The risk here is the opposite, the power being given to AI does not match it's intellect. Because it's so very dumb and unaware of what's happening, it can be given a task and it has the potential to run off and do things that were never intended. You're giving a dumb piece of software with no real safeguards or decision tree all the keys to the castle and hoping it doesn't glitch out. We aren't talking about slynet here so it's wrong to invoke those images. We're talking about incompetent AI being given responsibility it isn't ready for, and a need for regulation to prevent market forces pushing these products into sectors they ought not be in.
