This is so much more complicated than this coverage wants to make out. Let's start with a little bit of reality. Go ahead an name an MP in the job for at least 18 months who isn't a landlord. You can't, because there aren't any. They all get into property investment to offset their ministerial income for tax purposes. That means the ONLY people capable of making housing affordable, be it owning or renting, have a vested interest to do the opposite. You have affordability schemes like the first home buyers scheme, that have regularly adjusted maximum number of approved applications per quarter. On the surface these sound like an attempt to get people into homes, but it's actually about inflating demand to keep prices growing. Without these schemes demand would drop, prices would drop along with them and homes would become more affordable. The politicians can't let that happen. There's so much more complexity to this. So many interests to balance, so many forces at play.
