At least the UK has learned the way to stop this stuff is to send applicants to a third, impoverished country while their claims are assessed. We've been doing this in Australia for decades and it stopped the boats. Once the message gets through it's pretty much only genuine asylum seekers who come because they're the only people willing to endure what we have in-store for them whilst their claim is processed. Weird though that all the French police are speaking English. Is that for camera?

I came to say what Rollos said. An asylum claim is not a guarantee of acceptance nor refugee status. Nothing has changed since the system was first implemented under the UDHR.

@mwd331 The UK hasn't started utilising the Rwanda policy yet. It isn't illegal to process asylum claims in a third country, the UDHR makes it clear this is allowed. This policy works in every country that deploys it. Once the UK deploy the policy people in migrant countries start to understand they aren't going to make it to the UK, they'll stop coming. Takes about 2 years of consistent use and active advertising to drop levels of economic migration, but when it kicks in, it's a dramatic drop.

@D R The Rwanda policy was scheduled to be deployed but has been held up due to court action. The government can not deploy it until after the court case has been resolved. Once it's deployed it will work. It isn't a quick fix those don't exist. It's a methodical exercise in showing economic migrants they'll be worse off if they try to immigrate illegally into the UK than if they just stayed put. You need a few rounds of people being deported back from their home country before it becomes effective. There is no "better" way that remains at least partially ethical. They only respond to cruelty.
