Government agencies have had the ability to freeze your bank account for generations. What on earth are you talking about? You already live in a surveillance state. Your bank already knows where you spend your money. Even when you use cash. A cheque has to be deposited, it's no different than electronic transactions for tracking. It doesn't seem like this woman, whoever she is, really understands what she's talking about

@CarolJorgensen-oj8tz Westpac and no one could pay for anything? No one? We already live in a mostly cashless society. We have for at least a decade

I'm Australian, when did this "glitch" happen? No one seems to be talking about it, haven't had any trouble. 98% of Australians NEVER use cash. It isn't king, it's a waste of time. There's a difference between electronic payments and digital payments.

@theonethatisallnoneandone You watch too many movies. That's not how that would go down. The internet as a whole cannot "go down". If you understood what the internet is, you would understand it's not possible for the whole thing to go down all at once. But let's say ignore reality and pretend it could. Let's say it was down for 24 hours. You think society collapses in 24 hours? Optus went down for 48 hours, no one cared. Let's pretend the whole internet went down for a week. Great. People will survive. We have multiple communities, including at least one suburb of a major city experience a natural disaster every year. These result in people not having access to buying food for a week, two weeks, three weeks... we get by. People come together and help each other. There's government support. The same would be true for an outage like you're taking about. People would help each other. We already have a 98% cashless society. 98% of all Australians do not use cash. No one is hurting each other. Also, I'm not sure if you're aware of this but many EFTPOS terminals allow offline storing of transactions. So it can take payment offline and then process those transactions when it is reconnected to the internet. This is already a feature.
