I hate to say it but what your mom / dad have is slowly going extinct. Relationships now are becoming short-term value exchanges. If you want to deal with a woman you have to accept the risk, vet her for around 3 - 5 years, make sure she is calm, patient, agreeable, mentally and emotionally stable, and get a pre-nup. Also, maybe consider only having 1 kid to minimize the child support risk.

Founder equity = marriage, and employee salary = girlfriend. I would argue that marriage is a terrible idea regardless of being a founder or employee. Very few founders or employees want to stay with a company for 50 years. And some leave on very bad terms where there is no pre-nup in place. Founder = in the right place, at the right time.

In some ways, the argument is flawed. Why reward someone just because they were a founder at the right place and right time. And why punish someone who happened, through no fault of their own, who came later in the journey. Rather than rewarding someone based on a timeline, just get a pre-nup or do not marry in the first place.

@Straga_Severa best comment. Simple don't marry or at the very minimum get a bullet proof pre-nup.

I lost 70% of my money and assets in my UK divorce, including my house. Regardless of whether the women is a founder or employee, there should always be a pre-nup. Even in the USA, many divorces end up 70 : 30 after factoring in legal fees and alimony.
