@thehistorysquad I wonder how expensive a heavy silk shirt was compared to a mail shirt?? Silk was rare in Europe, I think, or maybe totally unobtainable.

Mongols had a trick that made all so simple, and increased the survival rate enormously. Mongol warriors wore a silk undershirt. It must have been a heavy silk. When hit with an arrow that penetrated the body - the silk shirt was not penetrated, but was dragged into the wound. The arrow was removed by just pulling it out. Even with barbs, I don't think the arrow would catch any flesh on the way out. Thus, Mongols survived arrows quite nicely. I think this is true. If someone knows more, and can elucidate, please do.

@thehistorysquad Since people then had to buy their own armor and weapons, war was definitely a rich people's game.
