  1. One thing that unites US and Britain -- we both love democracy. Of course, British democracy isn't very democratic, is it? No Constitution. People don't directly elect the Prime Minister. And, then Britain always has a King or Queen hanging around, doesn't it?? Of course, as Brits see it, America isn't very democratic. You don't really elect your President, do you?? You have these unknown guys, "Electors", who actually decide who is president. And then you have that weird two party system, where one guy from a small state, Kentucky, can rule your country, and have more power than your president. How is that democratic?? So, what unites us?? We both like cheddar cheese. I think that's it.

  3. Would you include made up words? --- --- Like those made up by Lewis Carroll in his nonsense poem Jabberwocky --- Gyre? Gimbol? Wabe? Chortle? I think Chortle in now a word. Or what about slang words -- like "copacetic", a slang word from Chicago meaning OK, alright, really good. "How are things?", ans: "Everything is copacetic." Despite its appearance, it has no Latin or Greek origin, I believe.

  4. When a mistake becomes the dominant way, then that becomes the norm, IMO. So, "octopi" is now correct. I am well educated, and know educated people. I have never heard one say "octopodes". All say "octopi". Isn't that how languages change??
