Amazing. Protecting businesses, which includes shoplifting suppression, is the primary function of EVERY local government. The local businesses are the foundation of the local economy. If they don't feel protected and welcome -- they will leave.

CA's big problem, IMO, is that it has expensive local economies in LA and SF, and then normal economies in the central valley. LA and SF may be able to support a $20/hr minimum wage, and possibly higher. However, other places probably cannot. An area with an average income of $60K cannot support the same minimum wage as an area with an average income of $100K. So, is a mandated minimum wage for everywhere the right solution??

Small businesses are run by regular people. If the city makes it difficult to run a business, they will leave. Even if profitable, they may leave. No one starts and runs a business to go through hell every day.

i used to live in Chicago. Grew up there. Loved the city. BUT -- now, no matter what you do, if you drive everyday, you will be getting a ticket at least once every 2 months. And that is if you are a good lawful driver. If you are a bit sloppy, you will get tickets every few weeks. Over a year, you could easily pay $500 to $1000 in fines. And a lot more if you don't pay right away. I left the city, and I no long have that burden. NYC sounds worse.

You seem opposed to $30 minimum wage for LA or SF areas. Have you been to them?? They are amazingly expensive. $30/hr may be correct. Have some faith with the local voters. They probably know more than you. NOW -- the same thing for ALL of CA is probably wrong.
