The Hurricane and Spitfire production figures show that Britain was NEVER close to losing the Battle of Britain. Just as Britain was never seriously bombed -- if we use the bombing raids of UK and US on Germany as the benchmarks of what serious bombings really were. The German raids on London were puny compared to the extreme destruction meted out to Berlin, Dresden, Hamburg, Frankfurt, and other German cities.

I do not accept the idea that the RAF was close to being defeated by the destruction of its airfields. First, Hurricanes and Spitfires took off from grass fields - not like concrete runways of today. The aerodromes were incapable of being destroyed, basically.

The most serious mistake made by Hitler and Japan was in not coordinating and creating a grand strategy. 1. Russia would certainly have been defeated if Barbarossa was accompanied by a Japanese invasion of Siberia. 2. With Russia defeated, Germany would have had all the oil and resources needed to take on Britain, and the US for that matter. So, for me, the biggest strategic mistake was a lack of an Axis Grand Strategy. Each country bumbled and improvised its way through the war to defeat.
