  1. Wrong. The claims of the non-China countries are ALL given to them by the UN's Law of the Sea. They are ALL claims of Exclusive Economic Zone. There is a process in the UN to resolve competing EEZ claims. An EEZ does NOT give sovereignty of that part of the ocean to a country. An EEZ is still international waters, and any ship can sail in it. They just cannot fish or extract anything. China, on the other hand, claims SOVEREIGNTY. That is, China claims the SCS as if it was internal waters . China says the own it completely. Their laws apply. No ship can enter OR leave without China's permission. If China wants to, it can stop a nation, like Japan, from using it at all. China could blockade a country, if it wants, when it wants. Such control of the SCS would reduce some of the nations in the region to being vassal states to China. This is what it is all about. Not fish, or oil.

  3. Note: A military blockade has long been recognized as an overt Act Of War. So, IF Russia blockades Romania, that is an Act Of War against a NATO country. That would almost certainly mean war with NATO. Stupid, right?? Well, yes. BUT -- Putin has proved himself to be stupid. He overestimates Russia's power, and under-estimates everybody else's power.

  5. One good thing about Japan's geography is that it has been able to develop with little bother from mainland troubles. Look at how many times China has been invaded, and even conquered. China always had problems with the pastoral nomadic cultures of central Asia. The only time a conquest was attempted was by the Mongols (yeah, I know, twice by them). Fortunately for Japanese culture, the Mongols were defeated. Also, resources are not really important in the modern world economy, Switzerland, Holland, Israel all have few resources, yet are wealthy, and live well. Oil helps a bit, but does not help a modern economy that much.

  6. Good info and analysis, EXCEPT, oil is declining as a strategic resource. It is the CO2 from burning oil that is causing the loss of Arctic ice, and opening up Arctic trade routes. BUT, this same warming will raise sea levels in coming decades and centuries. A sea level rise of 4+ feet by 2100 is expected by many. Sea level rise will accelerate from 2100 to 2200, and may rise 15+ feet or more in that century. Cities will be inundated. Ports will need to be moved. Rich river deltas, like the Nile and Mekong deltas, will be submerged. The Earth will profoundly change. How we move stuff from one place to another, will be the least of our problems.

  9. Where did you get all this misinformation?? It is just plain WRONG. Consider - as the Earth warms, the oceans warm, and more water VAPOR goes into the atmosphere. THEREFORE -- there will be stronger and more devastating rainstorms. The jet streams will hardly exist, so storm tracks will be unpredictable. For an idea, read about the climate during the Cretaceous. The Earth was NOT a big desert back then. It was WET due to increased water cycle. IMO, what you are reporting is incompetent extrapolations of the current effects of global warming. We are experiencing a desertification in the American Southwest, the Sahara, Australia, and some other places. But, that will NOT continue, IMO, as the water vapor rises and the jet streams collapse.

  10. BTW, I don't think Palestine, Lebanon, and Iraq were ever part of the Empire. Weren't they protectorates given by the League of Nations, and part of their "sphere of influence" agreed to with France at the end of WW1? Syria was France's sphere of influence, also, not a colony, like Algeria. At least, that is how I understand it.

  15. Today's tech makes naval deployment along a hostile coast suicidal. Look at how Ukraine with no navy has sunk, neutralized, and defeated Russia's Black Sea Fleet. ! ! ! Anti-Ship Missiles (ASM's) have changed military doctrine. Against a prepared and well armed foe, an amphibious assault will face certain defeat. Consider Taiwan. It has 400 Harpoon missiles from America. More importantly, it has over 2000 indigenously developed ASM's. Taiwan's missiles are advanced and sophisticated with good ECM and ECCM capability. Remember, Taiwan has access to the most advanced microchips needed for advanced electronics.

  16. Make the ship 50 miles long, and 5 miles wide. Spin it so their is an internal gravity. Have the shell 1/2 mile thick, with 400 decks/floors. The interior would have a "sky" that is 4 miles high. Have a salt water "ocean" 1000 ft deep. Have a fresh water lake 500 ft deep. The interior would have a surface 50 miles long, and 12+ miles around. So, roughly 600 square miles. Enough space for a small city, towns, a forest, and rural area. By varying "rainfall" and temperature, the climate zones of Earth can be recreated. The generation ship does not have to be a horrible place.

The wars with Poland, Sweden, and LIthuania don't really count since those countries no longer pose a threat to Russia. The world is very different from before the 20th Century. Putin's mistake, and seemingly, every analyst pontificating on this issue is that the world has CHANGED. 1. Wealth is not determined by land resources and agricultural production, as it was before 1800. 2. Wealth is not determined primarily by industrial production, like it was before WW2. 2.1 This is why colonial systems were dsimantled. They became unprofitable. 3. So, conquering other nations does NOT add to power or wealth. Conquering other lands is stupid. Putin's quest to add to Russia is stupid and silly. His thinking is centuries out of date. 4. Security is primarily established through treaties, and trading relationships. The EU has been VERY successful in unifying the interests of France, Germany, Italy, and UK (I know, it left). Western Europe, which had been warrring since Charlemagne, has been pacified. Russia was offered participation, but Putin refused. Putin's paranoia of NATO and the west is precisely that -- PARANOIA. There is no RATIONAL basis for thinking NATO and Europe is a threat. NATO is a DEFENSIVE alliance. It only comes into being if, and ONLY if, it is attacked. So, don't attack it.

  22. If resources were important, then Russia would be the wealthiest country (it's not). Canada is wealthy, but its resources are only partly responsible. Resources were essential to a 18th and 19th century economy. 20th Century economy was more about manufacturing (adding value to resources). The 21st Century economy will be about Finance & Information, IMO. That is why places like Switzerland, Israel, Singapore, UK and US will be major players. I think China's position in the world economy is now in relative decline, (Relative - it will still grow, but other countries will gain on it - India, Vietnam, and Indonesia. South Korea and Japan will keep their per capita lead on China.)

  23. IMO, the biggest consequence of the Ukraine War is the creation of the nation of Ukraine. Before the war, the nation of Ukraine was a question mark. Many Ukrainians identified as Russian. NOW -- the horror and trauma of the war has cemented their national identity. If they questioned that identity before, they don't now. The War of 1812 did that for the US. A war can crystallize a people's image of themselves. After this war, they will know who and what they are. Zelensky is becoming the father of Ukraine. Like George Washington was the father of the United States of America. Or, Ataturk the father of modern Turkey.

The casualties for Ukraine are pessimistic, while those of Russia are optimistic,. Considering the human wave tactics, I find it difficult to beleive that Russia has not suffered 3 to 4 times as many casualties. Finally, the ability of Ukraine to use drones and other home grown weapons to wreak damage on russia is also not mentioned, So, bye.

  28. Gone are the days when navies just had to worry about coastal artillery, or even anti-ship missiles. First, anti-ship missiles have become more lethal with ECCM to get thru electronic defenses. More importantly is the development of air & sea drones. Cheap unmanned weapons that can have great range. It is no longer navy vs. navy. It is navy vs. technology. I hope the US Navy is paying attention.

  31. Your explanation of the weakness of sun's power in Greenland is wrong. The added distance the light travels throught the air has a minor effect. The reason for it is the ANGLE of the sun's rays. Shine a flashlight straigt down on your floor -- note the area lit up. Now tilt your flashlight at a steep angle to the floor --- Note how much MORE area is lit up. The same amount of solar rays are spread out over more area. The energy at any one spot is decreased. THAT is why Greenland is cold.

  32. Your point about the Mississippi is correct, but inadequate. You should include all the navigable tributaries -- the Ohio, Illinois, Missouri, and Wisconsin rivers. And then, there are other smaller navigable rivers that contribute to the wealth of the US --- Tombigbee, Hudson, Potomac, Delaware, Colorado, Columbia, and Sacramento rivers. The United States is truly blessed.

  34. Pakistan's geography is only a problem in case of war. For the past 70 years, it has been Pakistan that has been creating conflict with India. Pakistan has no problem with Iran, from which is it protected by desert and mountains. (Isn't that good geography?) Pakistan created the taliban in Afghanistan, which is a source of some problem. The only geographic problem is with India, with whom they create the conflict. So, to create a conflict, and then bitch about the geography is stupid.

  36. Authoritarian rulers seem to have a pattern of behavior. 1. They see all problems as being solvable using their military. 2. They under-estimate the power of other countries - especially democracies. For some reason, they see democracies as weak. Historically, this has proved to be extremely STUPID. The most successful powers in the last 400 years include, Great Britain, United States, and the Dutch Republic. No one dares invade Switzerland. Democracies have proved their power, repeatedly. 3. Authoritarian rulers tend to overplay their hand. Hitler did. Napoleon did. Interestingly, Stalin & Mao did not against the US. They made sure the Korean War stayed limited. That could be because the US had just proved its might in WW2. So, they did NOT under-estimate the US. 4. At least with Hitler and Putin, they don't trust their military, reducing its effectiveness.

  41. Russia, the supplier, and Europe, the consumer, should have created a partnership in peace. Partners in peace because neither would benefit from a war with each other. The Ukraine war shows they don't benefit from high tensions. Putin's war, has profoundly damaged that trade that benefitted both. Europe now has to replace Russia's oil & gas, which will cost it more money. Russia won't find any customers better than Europe. Putin really f**ked up.

  45. Don't worry. The coming end of the world Oil Economy, will bring a profound end to the significance of the Middle East countries. As oil declines, so too do the nations of the Middle East. Their problems will become irrelevant to the world. The Saudi regime will lose their protection, and their power. Iran will become even more irrelevant than it has made itself today. Egypt will become a world disaster as sea level rise destroys its Nile Delta agriculture. Egypt will no longer be able to feed itself, or have the economy to buy its food. Millions will starve.   46. For years, I have been saying that China is Russia's real threat. The democracies of NATO hunger for peace, not war. The NATO "threat" is in Putin's mind only. No one rationally thinks NATO will put armies in Georgia or Poland to attack Russia. However, the battle for Asia has been going on for millennia. China being attacked from the west, and Europe being attacked from the east. The Xiongnu, Mongols, Huns, Avars, Alans, Magyars, Turks, rose out of central Asia to impact, conquer, and even take over. Russia took much of Siberia from China as it grew eastward. NOW -- the Global Times has said that China wants Vladivostok and other lands back, that Russia took. PLUS -- China claims to be an Arctic power. Well, that cannot happen unless China takes Siberia and gets an Arctic shore. Putin is weakening Russia profoundly. HOW can Russia stop China from taking Siberia, now that it has wasted its army??

  50. Strategy gave no account for naval response. 1. The US would immediately sink the Russian submarines. Los Angeles class subs were tracking almost all of them at the time. 2. Russia would not be have air superiority, and their armies would be attacked by air, and stopped. 3. The first "tactical" nuke would result in nuclear exchange. 4. Seeing Germany nuked, as the armies approached, France would assume it would soon be nuked and fire their own. 5. Russia would not have the resources for a long war, like Germany in 1939. 6. If a general nuke exchange was avoided by some miracle, the Soviet Union would be destroyed. That is probably why they didn't do it
