Shortly after I was laid off I developed some chest pain, probably from stress, my friends recommended that I go to the emergency room. Other than monitoring me and giving me some pills there was nothing else done. Late in the evening they recommended that I stay overnight. I reluctantly agreed. I left the hospital around noon the next day having spent less than 24 hours. A month later I got a bill for $21,0000 Yes, Twenty One Thousand dollars. I have to spell it out in case you think that is a typo. I was still on my corporate insurance policy so the majority of the bill was paid by them. Have since had an issue with a couple of teeth which has been an ongoing saga. Out of pocket so far in $8000, 8 grand. The US is fking awesome.

@jean-louislalonde6070 You know the best part? Receiving multiple solicitations for donations of cash to the hospital group for their stellar job caring for me. That's almost like the CEO of YouTube giving herself a freedom of speech award.

Yep, the ambulance one is another. During COVID I wasn't sure what was wrong with me. Called 911, ambulance from the fire station 2 miles away, that I pay for with my property taxes, comes and gets me, transports me to the hospital 10 minutes ride away. The bill, because they are not covered by any insurance, which is deliberate so that the price cant be negotiated, over $2000. Insurance refuses to pay, they come after me and I write them a nasty letter to which the woman running this scam writes me an indignant letter saying that the cost of the ambulance is mandated by the state. Think about that.
