Don't feel bad. My favorite piece of code was an improvement that I wrote that took almost 8 years to get into production. Years after I'd left the team I was told it went live. I asked whether there were any serious bugs or outages? The answer was, no, just a small bug that was easy to fix over night and the traffic rerouted the next day. Over the years the QA team had done everything in their power to create enough fear uncertainty and doubt over multiple data center moves that even testing under gradual load routing traffic into brand new DC's they buried the much improved system functionality.

Lemme guess, you're the kind of person that refactors but doesn't verify the code works the same ?

Also work in an Investment bank. There's a change that I need implemented that requires 3 lines of configuration added to an application. The application is not owned by my team BUT I used to be a lead on the team that owns the application that needs to be updated. I could make the change in about 30 seconds - which is what I'd do in the past WITHOUT a ticket created for the work but a ticket recording the change, the test and the deployment to prod. That's what I (we) did for over 12 year in this place. The agile "gurus" turned up with their pseudo religion and so far this change has been discussed for three weeks with multiple emails back and forth with the vendor pulling in the business side who now have to join a scrum/sprint planning session next week so that the change can be placed on the scrum board, appropriately prioritized for planning and aligned to a sprint to make sure that there isn't any sprint churn and the sprint burn down time looks good so the clowns at the top don't complain about the shape of the graphs. Working here is now like wading through sludge and treacle. I'm looking forward to putting this BS behind me.

Java is the absolute worst.

The Virtue Bat Signal has been sent up by Oracle. Who's playing the Bat Man? Microsoft, Google, YouTube ? What a flippin clown show.

I had a PR today that was all new code to do with transactions, rollbacks, multi-threading, everything! In a part of the system that I'd never seen before. The code was over 1200 lines and the PR was sent to me right at the end of the day. My response to the guy was: I've seen 10 lines of code to do with concurrency that everyone signed off on and 2 weeks later there was a deadlock in prod while I was on vacation. Yes, I hate reading code especially when I share part of the blame for approving it.

C++ jumped the shark long ago. It's a shame really.
