To call the Horten a 'failure' is a bit of a myth. The aircraft actually flew in prototype form but the program was cut short when the aircraft crashed when an engine failed, killing the test pilot. To say that the aircraft was stealthy was due to its construction being mainly of wood and its aerodynamic advantage of having a much less radar profile than a conventional aircraft. They didn't intentionally design it as a stealth aircraft, it was purely a product of the Horten brothers dream of a flying wing.
