They want to tell you how to live your live and to them Conservatism is the way you maintain antiquated reactionary views within the system set up by Enlightenment values. They want to remain within social attitudes that existed since before the revolutions of liberal republicanism. They want democracy to be a tool to remain within the Ancien Regime. Social liberalism means individual sovereignty and social freedom. Slash and Shapiro want Republicans to cling to losing stances.
